SSDI Benefits for Veterans
A friendly guide to what SSDI is, who qualifies, and how we make it easy.
What is SSDI?
SSDI is a monthly benefit - plus Medicare coverage - for veterans who can no longer work because of a serious, long-term health condition. It's run by the Social Security Administration (SSA), completely separate from the VA, and it won't reduce or affect your VA disability pay in any way.

SSDI vs VA Benefits: How They Compare
| Feature | VA Benefits | SSDI |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) | Social Security Administration (SSA) |
| Why you qualify | Injury or illness connected to your military service | Any serious condition that stops you from working, service-connected or not |
| How it’s decided | Disability rating (0–100%) | Medical severity + inability to do substantial work |
| Can I get both? | Yes. VA and SSDI don’t reduce each other | Yes. receiving one does not disqualify the other |
| Income limits? | No income limit to qualify | No asset limit, but earnings are capped while on the claim |
| Where to apply | VA.gov or a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) | ssa.gov or your local SSA office |
Your VA disability pay stays exactly the same — SSDI is a completely separate benefit.
